A Survey of Osteoporotic Patients’ Satisfaction with Bisphosphonate-Vitamin D Complex

Abstract
|

|
Objectives: This was to enhance the compliance of osteoporotic patients by investigating the satisfaction of patents when bisphosphonate, administered to osteoporotic patients, was replaced with bisphosphonate- vitamin D complex.
Methods: 996 patients who were converted to bisphosphonate-vitamin D complex were selected from the osteoporotic patients being treated with bisphosphonate over one month. During 12 weeks, these patients were administered orally bisphosphonate-vitamin D complex one a week according to taking method. The satisfaction of the doctors who prescribed and the patients treated with bisphosphonate-vitamin D complex was evaluated and the reasons for the satisfaction were also investigated. Also, patients’ compliance to the treatment and their will to keep the treatment was evaluated and the recognition of patients towards Vitamin D was investigated.
Results: In the survey of osteoporotic patients’ satisfaction with bisphosphonate-vitamin D complex, 86.4% of the patients were satisfied with treatment while 89.6% of the doctors were satisfied. The adherence towards the medication was found to be 97.4%. Regarding the will of patients and doctors to keep treatment with bisphosphonate-vitamin D complex, 95.8% of the patients and 98.7% of the doctors expressed their will to keep this treatment. While 37.1% of the patients recognized the importance of vitamin D in treating osteoporosis, 62.9% of them did not. At the time of survey, 29.5% of the patients were taking vitamin D while 70.5% of them were not.
Conclusion: The administration of bisphosphonate-vitamin D complex may enhance the effectiveness of treatment and the adherence to the medication.
